EMEX Anniversary 2025

Hello, it’s been a while! I wanted to get a post out sometime January/February, but alas, I was pretty busy with studies and work at that time.

You can expect a devlog sometime soon, near to the end of April, but this post is here to talk about the future of the mod, and the past! While I’m still working on studies and the mod at the same time, I’m doing my best to get most of the mod’s 2.0 update ready.

The Past

On the 2nd of April 5 years ago, the very first version of Empires Expanded (then called Civics Expanded!) was released on the Steam workshop. Initially, the mod was solely available on ModDB and Paradox Mods.

Now, that’s a lot of development time, in theory, but remember back at the mod’s release I was a somewhat small homunculus, one that has never programmed anything before, and didn’t even know of any sort of Stellaris modding techniques.

It was only really 3 years ago, in 2022, when the mod was re-released as Empires Expanded, with greatly improved features and changes. Even at this point, the mod wasn’t hugely unique or advanced in some aspects, but at least it was a lot more detailed than at release.

And now, the mod will soonTM be getting its 2.0 release. It’s been really cool seeing this mod grow from a small, basic test thing into a fully-fledged mod used by thousands. Thank you for being here along for the ride!

The Present

The 2.0 update is coming along well, but scope-creep is still going on, leading to more and more being added. Now, that doesn’t mean I’ve been working on this 24/7; as always, exams have taken up much of my time as well as work.

While pretty annoying, this summer will be a long time for me to work on the mod and other stuff too, as I’ll be going to university this September.

Here’s what I want to talk about before the release of the 2.0 update:

  • Changes/additions to older civics
  • Overhaul of Seeded Evolution origin
  • Overhaul of Born of Knowledge origin

My goal is to get the update out before the 4.0 update to Stellaris in May, since I will need to work pretty hard on getting it updated to 4.0 considering the massive changes to planetary management. But, I can’t promise that.

I know it’s been a long while since the last devlog, but I’m hoping to get back into making them a bit more. I’m planning on going a bit into overdrive to get this release done and dusted.

The Future

What’s next for the mod? Well in all honesty, I’m not too certain.

In fact, this 2.0 update may be the last major, massive update to the mod, as I’m in a pretty happy state with the mod. Not to say that changes/fixes/compatibility changes won’t be added, but I’m not going to be so heavily focused on adding brand new content.

That being said…

Once again, thanks to all of you for supporting my mod(s) throughout the years. And thanks especially for being so patient with this update.

Like I’ve said before, some of the new features are somewhat different and maybe start to branch out a bit from the “vanilla plus” experience, but I’ve made these features all optional and minimal, so let me know how you feel.

Thanks for reading, see you in the next one.
